Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Provocative 'Frail Characters' Comments

The English opening batter Crawley has indicated he had no knowledge of statements from skipper Stokes regarding the dressing room not being "weak men".

The all-rounder made this message in several interviews in the wake of England's defeat in the second Ashes series versus Australia previously.

In the lead-up to the Adelaide Test, where the visitors are staring at a series loss with a match to spare, Stokes noted he had allowed his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions over the past two days that I required," remarked Stokes.

But, after the opener made 85 on the fourth day in the third Test, he commented: "I didn't see that."

"I didn't see and wasn't really looking out for it. Our approach is to take everything that is said in the press with some skepticism," he added.

Raw Conversations and Consistent Messaging

Stokes made the "fragile individuals" comment subsequent to his side suffered a loss in the second Test to fall 2-0 down.

The England squad afterwards went on a break to Noosa in the gap between the second and the upcoming Tests.

Before the Adelaide contest, he said his players had held "honest" conversations and he had urged them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, the Kent batsman asserted the messaging from the captain and head coach Brendon McCullum had remained in line with their prior three years in charge.

"It's been very positive, the same as always," noted the opener. "The focus is on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. It felt like we were capable of an extraordinary feat going into this game."

The Hosts On the Verge of Historic Series Victory

Crawley's wicket on day four was part of a decisive triple-strike by Australia off-spinner Nathan Lyon.

The spinner's triple strike in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Stokes himself – meant the chasing side six down for 207 chasing a notional total of 435.

This means, Australia need four wickets on the last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three Tests.

A loss would prolong the English team's winless run in this country to 18 Tests and condemn them to a fourth straight overseas Ashes loss.

The current battle is set to be decided in only 11 days of cricket – with England losing the first two Tests in two and four days each.

The last time 1921, when the Australians sealed victory in the UK in eight days, has the destination of the Ashes urn been determined so quickly. Australia have also won in 11 days on two other instances in the modern era.

"It's disappointing," said Crawley. "We came here to regain the Ashes and we're facing elimination now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we will certainly approach it like that," he continued.

"The challenge has been difficult. Australia is a very, very good side. It was inevitably tough coming here to face them. They entered as the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Ollie Pope's Position In Question

While Crawley's performance in Adelaide probably answers questions about his short-term future in the side, Ollie Pope appears under immense pressure for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman was out for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, extending his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across 16 Ashes innings, the Surrey man has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

A solitary other England player in over a century – Amiss – has featured an equal number of innings in the top six in Ashes Tests and returned a lower average.

But, the opener insisted any notion Pope is being scrutinised comes from "the media" – meaning the press – "and not within the team."

"We all know how good of a player he is," added Crawley. "He has had a good year if I'm honest."

"He has played several excellent innings. It is talk externally. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope in the camp," he concluded.
