Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have operated alongside French aircraft in a combined operation targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the IS group, per a report from the UK's MoD.

The location, identified by reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the statement said, and was positioned in hills just north of the ancient city of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"Our fighter planes employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels leading to the depot... preliminary assessments suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the strike conducted Saturday night and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The British jets were backed up by a Voyager tanker plane.

Daesh - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over large swathes of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows the UK's leading role, and determination to stand shoulder to shoulder with our allies, to eradicate any re-emergence of IS and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," Britain's Defence Chief John Healey stated.

UK warplanes have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "forestall any attempted resurgence" of IS following its defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I must thank every member of British forces who took part in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey said. "They were part of a great many British troops deployed over the holidays. This mission, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our security, shows how UK forces are prepared to act, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

Last December, the United States armed forces executed what it termed a "major assault" against Daesh sites in the country, following an attack killed two US servicemembers and a civilian linguist in the Palmyra area.

The UN says Islamic State still has between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in both countries.
